Be sure to add compost each year in your garden and your ornamental plant beds. Whether you make it yourself or buy it in bags, compost is an exceptional product that has wonderful effects on the soil and plants. A real black gold for gardeners! In addition to providing an important quantity of essential nutritional elements to plants, the compost improves the composition of the soil.
By adding compost each year, the soil is easier to work, it doesn’t compact as easily by the rain or trampling, it allows the air and water to circulate in adequate quantity and better holds the nutritional elements. A yearly addition of compost also allows for nourishment and keeps the fauna and vegetation of the soil (weeds, mushrooms, bacterias, insects and useful animals) healthy.
A healthy soil will protect itself better against attacks from diseases and harmful insects. Spreading compost at the base of plants is done ideally in the spring, in April or in May, when cleaning the earth beds.
Spread the compost at the base of most annuals and shrubs in a 2.5 cm (1 inch) layer; the diameter of spreading should be about the width of their leafy crowns.
